The shot above shows the first view we ever had over the Palatine Hills in Rome. It was during that first day walking around town with our local friends, Paola & Ricardo.
We just stood there, speechless.
The stretch of ruins in the middle of town marks a moment of history we can only have a glimpse of and imagine. Raul, who’s usually accustomed to Mayan ruins and was not really interested in seeing any more ruins at all (except for Machu Picchu in Peru, of course), had to review his judgement.
So, after we visited the Coliseum that day, and since we still had a great amount of time to enjoy under the sun, we kept on walking and ended up entering the Palatine Hills. Through gardens and ancient emperors houses, with our imagination going wild, we wandered here and there, tried to picture the horses practice and the elite’s life and decorum. From the top of the hill, you have a fabulous view over the whole Palatine complex and part of the city. It is very impressive.
Finally, after a whole day walking around and back in time, our feet sore, our bellies empty but our minds full, we went home to a delicious pizza and tried to soak up all the little details that make up a grand city.

La primera foto del artículo muestra la primera vista que tuvimos sobre la Colina del Palatin en Roma. Fue durante el día que compartimos caminando con nuestros amigos locales, Paola & Ricardo.
Nos quedamos allá, mirando, sin palabras.
El extenso camino cubierto de ruinas en medio de la ciudad representa un momento de la historia que a penas podemos imaginar. Raul, quien está acostumbrado a las ruinas Mayas y que no quería ver ni una ruina más (salvo el Machu Picchu en Perú, por cierto), tuvo que pensarlo de nuevo y cambiarse la mente.
Entonces, luego de haber visto el Coliseo aquel día, y porque todavía era temprano bajo el sol, decidimos encarrilarnos hacia la Colina del Palatin. Atravesando los patios, parques, casas de emperadores, dejando correr nuestra imaginación, caminamos por todos los rumbos, intentamos revivir el paseo de los caballos y la vida de lujo de élite. Desde la parte más alta de la colina, uno no se puede perder una visa impresionante sobre el complejo del Palatin y una parte de la ciudad nueva.
Por fin, luego de haber caminado todo el día y de vuelta al pasado, con los pies adoloridos, los estomagos vacíos pero la mente llena, volvimos a casa para cenar una pizza y absorbar todos los detallitos que hacen una gran ciudad.

La photo en en-tête de cet article montre la première vue que nous ayons eue sur la Coline du Palatin à Rome. C’était notre premier jours, lors de notre grande balade dans toute la ville avec nos copains locaux, Paola & Ricardo.
On est restés là, bouches bées.
Cette étendue de ruines au milieu de la ville montre un pan de notre histoire qu’on ne peut pas complètement imaginer. Raul, qui a plutôt l’habitude des ruines mayas et qui ne voulait plus franchement en voir d’autres (à part le Machu Picchu au Pérou, bien sûr), a dû revoir son jugement et changer d’avis.
Alors, après avoir visité le Colisée ce jour-là, et puisqu’il nous restait pas mal de temps à profiter du soleil, on a continué à marcher et on s’est dirigés vers la Colline du Palatin. A travers les jardins, patios, et antiques maisons des empereurs, on s’est pris à imaginer la vie à l’époque, l’entraînement des chevaux, la décoration des maisons de l’élite romaine. Depuis le sommet de la colline, on a une vue fantastique sur tout le complexe du Palatin et une partie de la nouvelle ville. C’est impressionnant.
Après notre journée de marche et de balade dans le passé, les pieds fatigués, les estomacs vides mais l’esprit bien rempli, on est rentrés à la maison pour déguster une bonne pizza et se remémorer tous les petits détails qui font une grande cité.
Que préférez-vous découvrir quand vous visitez une ville pour la première fois?

Beautiful and I love the tree-hugging pic! When we first get somewhere, we usually wear ourselves out by walking EVERYWHERE. Never fails that we overdo it, because we get so excited. 😉
We’re tree huggers and all-day walkers (at least for the first 2 days!), then we can start to take it easier, relax and decide where to go. It usually depends on how long we’re staying.
(Going to Tenerife in 10 days for 1 week, I certainly plan on walking and hiking myself out!)

Isn’t Rome gorgeous? Impossible to take it all in on one visit. I’ve only been there twice, and each time was too short. Would love to go back. Beautiful photos you’ve included!

Nope!
Rome is simply filthy with monuments, ruins and art, isn’t it? They have very strict codes for new construction, I hear, so that they don’t destroy any historical ruins. But there is just sooooo much of it, it’s quite overwhelming! Imagine what it would be like to live with that history surrounding you every day, not just visit it. I wonder if they have the feeling of ancestors watching them?
I know! There or in Mexico where sometimes you can also see Mayan ruins in town, it always feels impressive and eerie to think there were people there at some point. Strange feeling but fun.
I hope they succeed in maintaining the ruins that way for a very long time still.
